About the Journal

Aim and Scope

Built Form is a scholarly international peer-reviewed journal that advances morphological theories, research, and practice in planning, design, and architecture. It publishes high-quality and innovative original research and practice articles and viewpoints. Released biannually in May and November, the journal welcomes submissions worldwide. The journal aims to foster global dialogue on built-form. It is an indispensable resource for urban morphologists, designers, planners, landscape architects, developers, and academic researchers.

Built Form aims to disseminate academic and professional studies focusing on urban form, urban morphology, urban design, the structure and evolution of cities, preservation and conservation, urban regeneration, local identity, urban aesthetics and landscape, heritage protection and management, spatial continuity and integrity, urban growth management, space syntax, Conzenian urban morphology, spatial analysis, typology, characterising and managing the urban landscape.

Special Issues

Built Form also publishes special issues. The peer review process for any submission related to a special issue follows the journal's standard procedure but may be managed by Guest Editors. These Guest Editors are responsible for assigning at least two referees to each article and assessing the reviews. While Guest Editors recommend actions and request revisions, only the Editors have the authority to make final decisions on whether to accept or reject a special issue article. Articles submitted to a special issue by Guest Editors are handled confidentially by Associate Editors or a member of the Editorial Board, outside the special issue's usual review process, to ensure an entirely objective evaluation.

Policy on Multiple Submissions

Please note that multiple submissions are not permitted and will be unsubmitted. Only one article may be considered for publication at any one time. The names and email addresses of ALL authors must be provided and the corresponding author is responsible for verifying that their co-authors do not have a paper currently under review or revision for Built Form

Peer Review Process

Built Form is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of peer review and upholding the highest review standards. All manuscript submissions undergo an initial evaluation by the Editor. If found appropriate for further consideration, they are sent for peer review by two independent, anonymous expert referees. The peer review process is double-anonymized.

Using Third-Party Material

You are required to obtain permission to reuse any third-party material in your article. Generally, brief text extracts and certain other materials may be used without formal permission, provided they are for purposes of criticism or review and within limited use. However, if you intend to include any content in your paper that you do not own the copyright for and that falls outside this informal allowance, you must obtain written permission from the copyright holder before submitting your work.

Ethics of Experimentation

The authors should ensure that all research presented in submitted papers has been carried out ethically and responsibly, adhering to relevant experimental codes and legal regulations. Any original research involving humans, animals, plants, biological materials, protected or confidential datasets, collections, or sites must include a written confirmation in the Methods section stating that ethical approval was obtained from the appropriate local ethics committee or Institutional Review Board, and that informed consent was obtained where necessary. All human research (including individuals, samples, or data) must comply with the principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki. If ethics approval is not required for non-interventional studies (such as surveys), authors should include a statement explaining why. If no ethics committees exist to provide approval, authors are encouraged to contact the Editor for further guidance.

Plagiarism Policy

The journal upholds intellectual property rights and is committed to protecting and promoting the original work of its authors. Plagiarism in articles breaches the standards of research integrity and originality. Therefore, all authors submitting articles to the journal must adhere to ethical standards and avoid plagiarism in any form. If plagiarism is suspected in a submitted or published article, the journal’s Publication Board will first review the work, followed by an evaluation by the Editorial Board. The author(s) will then be contacted and asked to provide their explanation within 15 days. If no response is received within this time frame, the journal will reach out to the author's affiliated institution for further investigation.

For published articles confirmed to contain plagiarism, the journal will take the following actions:

  • Remove the article's PDF from the website, exclude it from the issue file, and deactivate all links to the article. The title of the article will be amended to include "Plagiarized Article."
  • Disable the author's account and reject all future submissions from the author for the next 2 years.

Consent Policy

Authors must provide a statement confirming that informed consent has been obtained from any patient, service user, or participant (or their parent or legal guardian) involved in any qualitative or quantitative research. For submissions involving patients or participants who may be identifiable (such as in clinical case reports, medical histories, identifiable images, or media content), authors must confirm that written informed consent has been obtained to publish the details from the individual concerned (or their parents/guardians if the participant is a minor or unable to consent, or from next of kin if the participant is deceased). The consent process should involve sharing the article with the individual (or their representative) to ensure they are fully informed of the content before publication.

Health and Safety Policy

The authors should confirm that all required laboratory health and safety protocols were followed during the experimental work reported in the paper. Ensure that your paper includes all necessary warnings about potential hazards associated with the experiments, procedures, instructions, materials, or formulas described.

Data Sharing Policy

Authors are encouraged to share or make available any data and materials supporting the results or analyses presented in their paper. Please note that data should only be shared if it is ethically correct to do so, where this does not violate the protection of human subjects, or other valid ethical, privacy, or security concerns. Authors are encouraged to deposit the dataset(s) in a recognized data repository that can mint a persistent digital identifier, preferably a digital object identifier (DOI) and recognizes a long-term preservation plan. At the point of submission, you will be asked if there is a data set associated with the paper. If you reply yes, you will be asked to provide the DOI, pre-registered DOI, hyperlink, or other persistent identifier associated with the data set(s).

For cases where there is no subject-specific repository, you may wish to consider some of the generalist data repository types below.
